On this day, as part of the morning puRappAdu, emperumAnAr visits srI vAnamAmalai mutt, which is located in maNavALa mAmunigaL kOyil street. chinna kaliyan swamy (25th pattam of srI vAnamAmalai mutt) submitted a beautiful hamsa vAhanam to Adhi kEsava perumAL and emperumAnAr (after submitting hamsa vAhanam for srIvilliputhUr ANdAL nAchiyAr and AzhwAr thirunagari nammAzhwAr) many years ago. His thirunakshathram day is chithrai aswini (which happens to occur in emperumAnAr uthsavam). It is wonderful divine arrangement that emperumAnAr visits srI vAnamAmalai mutt on this 5th day of the uthsavam and on this day (whether aswini is passed or not) chinna kaliyan swamy's thirunakshathram is celebrated in srI vAnamAmalai mutt. 28th pattam - rAmAnuja jIyar swamy's thirunakshathram is also chithrai aswini. Today happens to be chithrai bharaNi which is the thirunakshathram of 29th pattam - pattarpirAn rAmAnuja jIyar (who is asmadhAchAryan - more details about him can be found in http://ponnadi.blogspot.in/p/acharyan.html). chithrai aswini and bharaNi (thirunakshathram of 25th, 28th and 29th pattam swamys) were celebrated with sEvAkalam and thadhIyArAdhanam at srI vAnamAmalai mutt, srIperumbUthUr.

2014 - emperumAnAr uthsavam day 1

srI:
srImathE satagOpAya nama:

srImathE rAmAnujAya nama:
srImadh varavaramunayE nama:
srI vAnAchala mahAmunayE nama:

Today is the beginning of emperumAnAr thiruvavathAra uthsavam. Let us start our anubhavam with two wonderful and auspicious pAsurams relating to the divine birth of emperumAnAr.
In rAmAnusa nURRanthAdhi, thiruvarangathu amudhanAr explains the glories of emperumAnAr's birth in pAsuram 41 beautifully:

maNmichai yOnikaL thORum piRanthu engaL mAthavanE
kaNNuRa niRkilum kANakillA ulakOrkaLellAm
aNNal irAmAnuchan vanthu thOnRiya appozuthE
naNNaru gyAnam thalaikkoNdu, nAraNaRkAyinarE

mAmunigaL beautifully explains this pAsuram in his commentary. srIman nArAyaNan who is our supreme lord, took many births in many different forms with the intent of uplifting jIvAthmAs. Still no one could understand him. But when emperumAnAr appeared in this world every one became enlightened and surrendered to emperumAn. Here mAmunigaL explains "vanthu thOnRiya appozhuthE" (the moment he appeared) in two ways - first he says "when emperumAnAr became known to the world by writing srI bhAshyam, etc" and then he explains it as  "the moment he takes birth in this world". piLLai lOkam jIyar explains the same in his vyAkyAnam for this pAsuram too. It is explained by our elders that when great mahAns appear in this world, that by itself brings auspiciousness to the entire world. As emperumAnAr descended from paramapadham purely for the upliftment of the entire world, there is no doubt that his appearance is the most auspicious event for the entire universe.

In Arthi prabhandham, mAmunigaL's divine revelation about the purpose of emperumAnAr's birth is most touching and we can easily understand the humility of mAmunigaL from this pAsuram 41. It is a wonderful coincidence that both pAsurams are numbered 41 and talk about the glories of emperumAnAr's birth.

enaippOl pizhai cheyvAr ivvulagil uNdO
unaippOla poRukka vallAruNdO
anaiththulagum vAzhap piRantha ethirAsa mAmunivA
Ezhaikku irangAy ini

Is there anyone who can commit mistakes like me? Is there anyone who can tolerate those mistakes like you? Oh yathirAja who took birth for the upliftment of the entire universe! you please help this poor soul.

Though mAmunigaL is emperumAnAr's punar avathAram, he glorified emperumAnAr to teach us how to pray to him. This is like srI rAma himself worshipping srI ranganAthan to teach us how to worship him.

Thus we can understand the glorious purpose of the appearance of emperumAnAr - purely for upliftment of the entire universe. This is why he is glorified as jagadhAchArya - the AchArya (one who shows the real path of salvation) of the entire universe. jagadhAchArya just does not mean AchArya of common mass of people - it means that he is accepted as AchArya by great AchAryas (even outside srIvaishNava sampradhAyam). That is the special glory of emperumAnAr which is not to be found in any one else.

Let us now start enjoying the emperumAnAr's thiruvavathAra mahOthsava anubhavam.

During the first 9 days of uthsavam, mudhalAyiram, periya thirumozhi and iyaRpA are recited during the puRappAdu (procession). On this final day, in most dhivya dhEsams in thoNdai nAdu, thiruvAimozhi will be recited at a stretch. In some temples, dhvAdhasa thiruvArAdhanam (12 thiruvArAdhanams) to perumAL is done along with pushpa yAgam. It is also common to observe thirumanjanam for emperumAn before thiruvAimozhi recital. In some temples, all emperumAns/AzhwArs/AchAryas will be present for the thirumanjanam and thiruvAimozhi recital. In the evening, perumAL with thAyArs will enjoy puRappAdu in small chariot, puNya kOti vimAnam or chapparam with rAmAnusa nURRanthAdhi gOshti. During completion, iyal sARRumuRai will also be recited. After returning to the temple, all the dhEvathas, rishis, srIvaishNavas who are visiting will be given a send-off by perumAL (archakas usually recite these verses). After that, the main archakar who took dhIksha for the uthsavam will be given a customary send-off with all bahumAnams from perumAL.

  • Afternoon
    • thirumanjanam for perumAL/thAyArs. Special thirumanjanam for selvar (bErar - a form of emperumAn)
    • thiruvArAdhanam
    • thiruppAvai, thiruppallANdu, kaNNinuN chiRu thAmbu, thiruvAimozhi gOshti and sARRumuRai
  • Evening
    • puRappAdu for perumAL and thAyArs in puNya kOti vimAnam with rAmAnusa nURRanthAdhi gOshti around the town.
    • iyal sARRu after completion of rAmAnusa nURRanthAdhi
  • Night
    • perumAL arrives at the maNdapam near dhvaja sthambam
    • All rishis/dhEvathas/srIvaishNavas are given send off.
    •  bhattar given honors from emperumAn and given send off accompanied by others.
Thus ends Adhi kEsava perumAL's jaya varusha brahmOthsavam wonderfully.

2014 - brahmOthsavam day 9

srI:

srImathE rAmAnujAya nama:
 srImadh varavaramunayE nama:
srI vAnAchala mahAmunayE nama:

On this 9th day of brahmOthsavam, mattaiyadi (praNaya rOsham/kalaham - friendly quarrels between lovers - perumaL and thAyAr) uthsavam is observed in many dhivya dhEsams. This uthsavam is celebrated with great joy in srIrangam during panguni uthram. This is continuation of yesterday's hunting uthsavam. perumAL goes to the forest to kill evil beasts and protect his dependants. In the process, he gets little wounds on his divine body. So, he covers his body and returns to the temple.

At the temple, thAyArs are upset with emperumAn thinking that he went to be with his other nAchiyArs. They shut the door and does not allow emperumAn to enter the temple. emperumAn pleads innocence with them and explains that he did not go looking out for women but we went to protect his citizens as a king would take care off his citizens. Finally, with the intervention of nammAzhwAr (in srIperumbUthUr, sEnai mudhaliyAr is the mediator instead of nammAzhwAr), thAyArs become pacified. perumAL and thAyArs play with flower balls and reveal the deep love for each other.

After this, avabrutha snAnam (thIrthavAri - holy bathing) of chakkarathAzhwAr is celebrated with great joy (in some dhivya dhEsams, perumAL himself will bath in the pushkariNi/tank or the water body which is present nearby).

The whole uthsavam is a great revelation of the mercy/compassion of emperumAn and thAyArs enacting wonderful pastimes to uplift every one in this samsAram. People are generally engaged in all kinds of materialistic activities. By placing himself in the center of all the events and enacting wonderful events, emperumAn attracts all kinds of people towards him, reform them, change their attachment from worldly pleasures to spiritual matters and finally uplift them. This is the whole purpose of emperumAn's uthsavams.

    • perumAL's pOrvai (shawls) are removed one by one.

    • perumAL returns to temple.
    • Temple doors are shut and emperumAn is not allowed inside.

    • emperumAn pleads innocence and divine conversation between emperumAn and thAyArs - recited by archakas. emperumAn/thAyArs play with flower balls.

    • emperumAn, thAyArs and chakkarathAzhwAr go to the maNdapam near the pushkariNi for thIrthavAri.

    • thirumanjanam for chakkarathAzhwAr followed by thIrthavAi (holy dip).
